The halfway of 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has already done and dusted, where Gujarat Titans are on the top of the table and Delhi Capitals are bottom of the table (till 43rd match)
The top-4 teams will qualify for the Playoffs. While the top-2 teams will get an extra chance to qualify for the finals, the teams’ ending at the 3rd and 4th spot will play a sudden death game (Eliminator) to earn their spot in the 2nd Qualifier, where it will face the loser of Q1.
Here we predict the IPL 2023 standings at the end of the league stage:
#10 DELHI CAPITALS
There is no doubt over the fact that the finalists of the last season, Delhi Capitals (DC) are in contention of winning their maiden IPL trophy this year. Delhi boasts of having one of the most competent squads among all the eight franchises and the picks made by them during the IPL auction ensures that the team has all the bases covered.
DC has one of the best spin attacks on their side in the form of Axar Patel, Ravi Ashwin, and Amit Mishra along with a formidable pace attack including the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Chris Woakes, Anrich Nortje, Umesh Yadav, and Ishant Sharma.
Coming to batting, the inclusion of Tom Curran and Steve Smith gives good back-up options to the team-management. The presence of Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Michael Marsh, Kuldeep, and Pandey in the batting line-up is nothing less than a nightmare for any opposition.
But this season IPL trophy looks pretty gloomy for them. They Lost six out of eight matches and now they are bottom of the points table. The upcoming match against Gujarat will be do or die for them.
#09 SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
SRH entered the IPL 2023 player auction with the biggest purse of INR 42.25 crore and spend wisely to recruit quality additions. They spent INR 13.25 crore to sign English sensation Harry Brook and INR 8.25 crore for the experienced Indian top-order batter Mayank Agarwal. But Brooke is undercooked now. They flop badly and that’s the reason they are in that position.
It would be wrong to say that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have all their bases covered and have one of the strongest squads. SRH also has a competent bowling attack owing to the presence of pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan and spinner Sunder. However, SRH can face problems due to their inexperienced and young middle-order.
In this year IPL 2023 Sunrisers Hyderabad’s players are not performing well and that’s the reason they are in 2nd position from the bottom of the points table.
#8 KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERs
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are one franchise that knows how to deliver even without the presence of star players in their squad. They had failed to qualify for IPL 2022. It is expected that the same scenario might repeat itself this year too as it is speculated that KKR can finish in Eight position in the points table.
The Knight Riders had a good auction as they managed to pick players like Shakib Al Hasan, David Wiese, Liton Das, and Shardul Thakur in their squad. However, one thing that can put the team in trouble is their over-dependence on overseas players in the batting department
The team will be very much dependent on, Nitish Rana and Andre Russell and their failure can result in a collapse of the whole batting line-up. All being said, KKR can also spring some surprise for the viewers as it is almost impossible to stop Russell if he gets into the groove.
But this season IPL trophy looks gloomy for them. They Lost six out of nine matches and now they are 3rd place from bottom of the points table.
#7 MUMBAI INDIANS
it is a no-brainer that Mumbai Indians will enter the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the favorites as they have the strongest team. Mumbai is most likely to play their winning combination of last year from the very beginning of the league.
The presence of Ishan Kishan, Tim David and Surya Kumar Yadav in the middle-order means that the team is capable of firing as many as 50-60 runs in the last few overs. The top-order is well settled including Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Cameron Green.
Owing to the presence of Tilak Verma in the lower-order, Mumbai has a great depth to their batting order. Coming to the bowlers, they boast of having the services of world-class bowlers with Jofra Archer and Rile Meredith being their ace pacers
The year 2022 was their worst season bar none, when Mumbai finished last of ten, their batting struggling, and their poor auction strategies exposed. You’d have to go back to 2009 for anything like a comparably poor finish: they were seventh out of eight teams that year. They finished in fifth place in three seasons, 2018, 2016 and 2008.
But this season IPL trophy looks gloomy for them. They Lost four out of eight matches and now they are 4th place from bottom of the points table.
#6 PUNJAB KINGS
Punjab Kings, despite having several stars in their squad, have failed to convert talent into notable performances. They reinforced their squad at the mini auction held in December 2022 and bought the services of all-rounders Sam Curran and Sikandar Raza.
Punjab have been finishing in sixth position in the points table since 2019 and they last made it to the playoffs in 2014. With the 2023 season almost here, the 2014 runners-up will be eager to finally up their game and enter the playoffs after nine years. As Punjab prepare themselves to put up a strong performance in the upcoming edition, let’s do a complete SWOT analysis of the team.
They finished as wooden spooners three times: in 2010, 2015 and 2016. The 2015 season was particularly galling, coming as it did after their best year. They won only three games and lost 11 in 2015
But this season IPL trophy looks gloomy for them. They Lost four out of nine matches and now they are sixth place of the points table.
#5 ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE
IPL 2023 can be another year of disappointment for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Bangalore outfit has a formidable batting line-up due to the presence of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj, Dinesh Karthik and Josh Hazelwood
Their spin-attack is also world-class as they have Bracewell, Hasaranga and Karn Sharma on their sides. However, the thing that can cost Challengers the season is their inexperienced middle order.
This season they are strong contenders to be champions. They won five out of nine matches and now they are in fifth place on the points table.
#4 CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were one of the most talked-about teams in IPL 2023 as for the first time they are now fourth position on the points table by winning 5 games out of 9 played. However, leaving the demons of the past behind, the Super Kings, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, are expected to bounce back stronger and book a berth for themselves in the second stage of IPL 2023.
Rahane will make a comeback for the Yellow Army in IPL 2023, which will provide required stability to the team while the inclusion of all-rounders Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja is also expected to do wonders for the team. This time, CSK looks a good blend of batsmen, bowlers, and all-rounders.
This season they are strong contenders to be champions. They won five out of nine matches and now they are in fourth place on the points table.
#3 LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS
Making their second appearance in the 16th edition of the eagerly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL), Lucknow Super Giants have bettered their squad as compared with the 2022 season. The KL Rahul-led side managed to rope in players from the mini-auction, who could potentially create impact and guide them to glory in the forthcoming campaign.
Speaking about their performance in their debut season, LSG relished a decent campaign as they concluded the league phase standing third on the points table. However, the side made a screeching halt after a loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator of the play-offs.
With Nicholas Pooran, Amit Mishra, and Jaydev Unadkat among others set to don the Lucknow jersey for the new season, the franchise will go all in and aim for an improved campaign. The squad looks balanced on paper; however, it remains to be seen how the management builds a core team to fight for the coveted trophy.
Despite having some experience playing in the league, the bowling unit looked undercooked. Now, having acquired a seasoned pacer like Jaydev Unadkat, it appears as though the team looks well-balanced.
In IPL 2023 they are strong contender of Champion. They have won 5 out of 9 matches and they are 3rd position on points table
#2 RAJASTHAN ROYALS
Ahead of the IPL 2023, the Sanju Samson-led side retained the core group of players and further strengthened their side with quality reinforcements. They procured the services of Jason Holder, Joe Root and Adam Zampa at the IPL 2023 player auction to fill the gaps and signed Donovan Ferreira, Murugan Ashwin and Sandeep Sharma to strengthen their backup game.
However, Rajasthan is having to deal with a big blow as pacer Prasidh Krishna has been ruled out of the season with an injury. The right-arm pacer, who will miss the entire 2023 season due to back stress, was the leading wicket-taker for the franchise with 19 wickets in IPL 2022. Sandeep Sharma has been called in as his replacement, but the IPL veteran hasn’t played any T20 cricket this year. Keeping all these points in mind, let’s take an analytical overview of Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2023.
One of the major problems encountered by the Royals last year was the lack of support for Trent Bolt especially while bowling in death overs. To solve this, RR picked Sandeep but prone to injuries and this can hurt the team. In addition, the Royals will be led by an inexperienced captain, Sanju Samson.
Just like the previous season, RR is overly dependent on their overseas batsmen Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes. Though they have Riyan Parag and Shivam Dube, the two are relatively inexperienced and yet to make a mark for themselves
They are Runner up in IPL 2022 but. This season they are one of the strongest contenders to be champions. They won five out of nine matches and now they are in 2nd position on the points table.
#1 GUJARAT TITANS
The biggest strength of GT is their team spirit and the way all the players contribute towards the team’s victory. GT has shown the best way that a team without many big names can come together with small but useful contributions from all to lead their team to dominating wins.
Openers like Shubman Gill, who is in red-hot form alongside Saha, would be the most reliable opening pair in the IPL. Gill can give a consolidating start to the inning, while Saha can add stability, and both would combine to give GT the start they would desire.
Though GT lacks star power, some veterans include skipper Pandya and Proteas batter David Miller. Both players played an immense role in the Titans’ exceptional performance in the last edition, each scoring 450+ runs and winning vital matches for the team.
Pandya and Miller, however, appear to have lost their spark with the willow this year. Even Rashid, widely regarded as the best bowler in the shorter format, appears to have lost his specialty as he faced batsmen from all over the world. The lack of runs for these batters would be of severe concern for the Titans.
They are Champion in IPL 2022 and This season they are one of the strongest contenders to be champions. They won six out of Eight matches and now they are in1st position on the points table.
